Milingimbi, where we live, is a small island, just separated from the mainland. Because there is hardly anything to do, we own a small boat, together with two other families. Going boating/fishing is the only outing we have. Milingimbi doesn't have a harbour, so we take the boat out of the water all the time. The boat trailer was completely rusted through, and it wouldn't be long before the boat would crash through it

We found a cheap new trailer in Darwin (the nearest big town). One of our aircraft engineers offered to drive the trailer to Ramingining. A journey of 800 km, of which the last 400 km is dirt road. But that is still the mainland. How do we get the trailer to Milingimbi? Well, easy, you just tie a few empty drums to the trailer and drag it accross the water.

Because we had to go very slowly, the crossing took about an hour. We kept a close eye on the trailer. I was really worried one of the drums would start leaking, or that the straps would let go, after which we would have had a very expensive anchor.

At any other place in Australia this would be called absolute stupidity, but in Milingimbi... it's necessary!

And as it turned out, a week later the old trailer was used to transport a little rubber boat and on the way to the boat ramp the trailer broke in two! So we are very happy to have the new boat trailer!
